~ Kelly & Chris | June 8, 2019 ~
Kelly and Chris met as undergraduate students at the University of Maryland long before their University of Maryland wedding! As under graduation, they both worked as trip leaders for Maryland Adventure Programs. They were supposed to lead a canoeing trip together, and while the trip never happened due to weather, thankfully their friendship was born. They remained close friends while Chris prepared to study abroad in Italy and Kelly to graduate, and went on their first date (as friends) to Great Falls MD to hike the Billy Goat Trail.
After Kelly graduated and Chris returned for his senior year, Kelly visited College Park every weekend to hang out with him, go to football games together, and do crossword puzzles over happy hour at Looneys (a bar in town). Just about 1 year after their first trip to Great Falls they returned to the park, this time as a real date.
On May 11, 2018, Chris suggested to Kelly that they go to Great Falls after work to celebrate his new job and the beautiful weather. They walked hand in hand to the falls overlook–a view they have visited over many important moments in their relationship (first excursion together, first date, before Kelly moved to Wisconsin for grad school, before Kelly moved to St. Louis for a summer internship, before Kelly moved to
Blacksburg for grad school… are you noticing a trend here?).
Kelly had no idea what was about to happen and her only clue was Chris’s odd comment that he hoped someone would be there to take their photo. With a stunning sunset as a backdrop, Chris asked another random couple there to take their photo. Just as the shutter was clicking, Chris got down on one knee.
Kelly’s flowers reflected their shared interest with classic, simple, greenery and white ranunculus, hydrangea, and roses.
For the ceremony, there was no question that the couple would have a University of Maryland wedding in the Memorial Chapel! Not only were Chris and Kelly both alums (Chris a two times alum!), but they met on campus and passed the chapel daily! And both bride and groom are huge University of Maryland football fans!
During their University of Maryland wedding ceremony, a family friend played the piano. The pianist also played at Kelly’s parents’ wedding many years ago.
In her vows, Kelly described when she first met Chris. She explained that she instantly knew that she wanted him in her life forever, whether as friends or something more.
Chris and Kelly added a bubble exit at the last minute of wedding planning (at my suggestion! Yes, I am taking credit! :).
I always ask my couples what moment(s) of their wedding they are anticipating the most. Kelly and Chris responded: “spending time with friends and family and getting awesome photos around campus.” No University of Maryland wedding is complete without a photograph on the mall.
Kelly and Chris chose Overhills Mansion for their reception because they first bonded over their love of the outdoors, and knew that they wanted a venue that was naturally beautiful. In addition, both the bride and groom have big families, so they needed plenty of space. Those factors drew them to Overhills Mansion, with its stunning backyard and beautiful, large indoor room.
Chris’s brother and best man arranged for the University of Maryland’s mascot, Testudo, to make an appearance at cocktail hour and surprise the bride and groom. This was the perfect surprise for these UMD fans!
Kelly and Chris’s advice to other couples is: “Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it, but also to make the day reflective of you!”
